Chandigarh: In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing battle against narcotics, Punjab Police’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) arrested former MLA and BJP leader Satkar Kaur Gehri and her nephew, Jaskeerat Singh, for attempting to peddle 100 grams of heroin near Sunny Enclave, Kharar, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Headquarters, Sukhchain Singh Gill, announced today.
Satkar Kaur was elected as the Congress MLA from Ferozepur Rural in 2017 but later switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2022 after the Congress denied her the ticket for re-election. She, along with her nephew Jaskeerat Singh, a resident of Behbal Khurd village in Ferozepur and currently residing at her house in Kharar, was arrested while trying to peddle drugs.
Jaskeerat was driving the vehicle while Kaur was seated beside him. During a subsequent search of Kaur’s residence, the police recovered an additional 28 grams of heroin, bringing the total seizure to 128 grams. Additionally, ₹1.56 lakh in cash, gold ornaments, and several vehicle registration plates bearing Haryana and Delhi numbers were seized. The police also impounded four luxury vehicles, including a Toyota Fortuner, BMW, Hyundai Verna, and Chevrolet.
IGP Sukhchain Singh Gill explained that the ANTF acted on a reliable tip-off from a source who had been purchasing drugs from Kaur. The source provided critical evidence, including mobile numbers and call recordings, linking the ex-MLA to drug trafficking activities.
Following this, the ANTF set up a sting operation. A decoy buyer arranged a transaction with Kaur at a pre-arranged location near a kiosk in Sunny Enclave.
As the ex-MLA and her nephew handed over the heroin, police teams moved in swiftly to arrest them. The suspects attempted to flee, and in the process, a police officer was injured when the accused driver attempted to run him over.
A thorough search of Kaur’s residence yielded further evidence, including the additional heroin, cash suspected to be drug proceeds, luxury cars, and multiple vehicle number plates—further implicating Kaur in extensive drug smuggling operations.
IGP Gill added that investigations are ongoing to uncover more links in the case, and further arrests are expected in the coming days.
An FIR (No. 159, dated 23/10/2024) has been registered under Sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Special Task Force (STF), SAS Nagar.
