THE ELECTION COMMISSION of India (ECI) has announced by-elections for four assembly seats in Punjab, namely 10-Dera Baba Nanak, 44-Chabbewal (SC), 84-Gidderbaha, and 103-Barnala.
Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C, while sharing the details, stated that the official notification for these by-elections will be issued on 18 October. The last date for filing nominations is 25 October, with scrutiny of nomination papers scheduled for 28 October. Candidates will have until 30 October to withdraw their nominations.
According to the timeline, voting will be held on 13 November, and the counting of votes will take place on 23 November, with the results declared the same day.
With the announcement of the by-elections, the Model Code of Conduct has come into effect in the districts of Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Barnala, where these constituencies are located. The code will remain in force until the completion of the election process on 25 November.
Voters and Polling Stations in the Four Assembly Constituencies
As of 10 October 2024, the total number of registered voters in the four constituencies stands at 6,96,316, with 831 polling stations set up. The breakdown is as follows:
10-Dera Baba Nanak: 1,93,268 voters, 241 polling stations
44-Chabbewal (SC): 1,59,254 voters, 205 polling stations
84-Gidderbaha: 1,66,489 voters, 173 polling stations
103-Barnala: 1,77,305 voters, 212 polling stations
Election Officials Appointed
Sibin C also announced the appointment of District Election Officers (DEOs) for the respective constituencies:
Uma Shankar Gupta, Deputy Commissioner, Gurdaspur, for Dera Baba Nanak
Komal Mittal, Deputy Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, for Chabbewal (SC)
Rajesh Tripathi, Deputy Commissioner, Sri Muktsar Sahib, for Gidderbaha
Poonamdeep Kaur, Deputy Commissioner, Barnala, for Barnala
In addition, the Returning Officers (ROs) have been designated:
SDM, Dera Baba Nanak, for Dera Baba Nanak
ADC (G), Hoshiarpur, for Chabbewal (SC)
SDM, Gidderbaha, for Gidderbaha
SDM, Barnala, for Barnala
Sibin C assured that the by-elections will be conducted in a peaceful, transparent, and impartial manner. All necessary arrangements are in place to ensure smooth polling.
